Elective Course Structure

Brydon English Language Institute offers a variety of elective courses for students who are interested in filling their afternoon schedules. To qualify for these courses each student must take a placement test and achieve a minimum of intermediate proficiency (all placement tests are offered on-site). The elective courses are for students who want to take advantage of personalized, flexible and more interactive approaches. Students who are interested in taking elective courses in the afternoons will have different elective options.
  Elective course availability will depend on the number of students interested in taking these elective courses each term. The students will have an option to choose from five different electives. The elective courses will meet twice a week for two hours.

Elective 011-012-013 American Culture

This course offers students an exciting panorama of American culture. Featuring informative and entertaining readings about American people, places, and events. This course promotes cross-cultural discussions and builds controlled vocabulary knowledge. Topics include U.S. geography, rock music, the film industry, inventions, famous people, and new technology. This course is available in Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate and Upper-Intermediate levels.

Elective 021-022-023 Vocabulary Development

This course provides the essential vocabulary in an integrated way. The steps that are used to teach the essential vocabulary are simple, effective, and enjoyable. Vocabulary development is enabled through word families, multiple meanings, collocations, and expressions that expand students’ knowledge of the words. Students are encouraged to participate in engaging discussions and writing topics that elicit natural use of the words. This course is available in Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate and Advanced levels.

Elective 031-032-033 Listening Development

This course incorporates authentic radio interviews from National Public Radio to provide a context for listening comprehension and discussions. Students not only develop listening strategies and critical thinking skills, but also learn to integrate grammar and vocabulary activities into their everyday speech and writing.  This course is available in Intermediate, Upper-Intermediate and Advanced levels.

Elective 041-042-043 Communication Strategies

This course focuses on vocabulary, patterns, and collocations that English language learners need in order to communicate actively. Students will develop their communication strategies in pair and small-group activities. This course is available in Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate, and Upper-Intermediate Levels.

Elective 051-052-053 Pronunciation Skills

This course gives the students all the necessary tips, tools, and techniques they need to speak clearly and accurately. All aspects of pronunciation are addressed – sounds, stress, rhythm, and intonation. The variety of activities enables the learners to acquire accurate pronunciation in a fun way. Focused practice includes surveys, games, and high-interest listening and speaking tasks which guide students from controlled to communicative interaction. This course is available in Pre-Intermediate, Intermediate and Upper-Intermediate levels.

 

These courses will not count for university credit and cannot be used toward a degree program.
Brydon English Language Institute’s courses are subject to change.

A minimum of 5 students must register in order for a course to be held.
Exam fees and course books are not covered in course price.
